After 4 major abdominal surgeries, in both public and private hospitals, I have now got it down to a fine art, and want to share how with a few key products and a little creativity that can make your time in hospital less clinical and more like a zen retreat. Once you get over the "mum guilt" of taking time out of the family, it can really be the perfect time to get ahead and prioritise both your physical and mental health.
This is how I made the most of it:
Delegation: Managing your team
As a mother, the thought of spending time in a hospital can be daunting. The organisation of your responsibilities early is key to being able to let go once you are incapacitated. I created a spreadsheet on a shared drive where my husband and mum could confirm their availability to do drop off and pickup, and where I could also add in notes such as "don't forget flute". Needless to say, flute was forgotten. but children were dropped and picked up with some level of efficiency. The hardest part is getting everyone to refer to the document, as just the asking added to my mental load- but they are getting there. This shared document is also waht i use for school holiday planning as well.
Practical and relaxing hacks
Creating a comfort kit was so much fun and i got lots of feedback from the nurses about my setup! Here are a few of my favourite things:

Phone holder: This attached to the bedside table and easily allowed me to watch movies or scrolled through my phone without holding it. You can flip between portrait and landscape view, and it fits both iphones and tablets. Really cheap at only $7.39 from Temu
Eye Massager: The Renpho Eye Massager is one of the best mothers day gifts I have ever received, ad i never get enough time to use it. During my hospital stay, I used it every evening to wind own into sleep. It uses a combination of heat, massage, and vibration (as well as music- not to my taste, but you can use a setting without it). Gives serious luxe vibes. Your can buy one HERE
Red light mask: These are now a bit of a beauty staple, but are definitely a good hobby to partek it while you are flat on your back. I felt so much more comfortable being makeup free when it was glowing!
Adjustable laptop table: If you are looking to do a project or keep up with work, this table was great as I was able to stay in the position I needed to and still see my screen. Available from Temu:
Ear Plugs: Nothing fancy here, but don't forget them. the nurses belss ring all night long.
Cozy Pajamas: I packed a pair of soft, lightweight pajamas. They provided the comfort I desired and were far more pleasant than the hospital's scratchy gowns.
Fuzzy Socks: Hospitals can be cold, and my fuzzy socks kept my feet warm while adding a touch of coziness to my outfit.
Quality Skincare Products: Staying hydrated is crucial in a hospital setting. I included my favorite moisturiser and vaseline to combat dryness and keep my skin glowing throughout my recovery. (hint- vaseline under the eyes adds serious hydration)
A Beautiful Blanket: A soft throw blanket was also in my bag. Not only did it keep me warm, but it also added colour and personality to my otherwise plain room. Your may also find the nurses can provided heated blankets during your stay. This was such a lovely evening ritual to have a cozy night.
Pen and notebook: theres somehting about a good sleep and some painkillers that can get the creative juices flowing. Make sure you have a pen and paper handy (or the notes section of your phone!).
Nourishing Your Body: Delicious Choices
I've spent time in both public and private hospitals in NSW- and my experience has been a new Public hospital is just as good as a Private hospital (if you are lucky enough to get your own room)- with one big distinction- food!
If you are finding the hospital food unappealing, its time to bring out Uber Eats and have a feast. They will normally drop it to the reception desk and deliver it to your room.
This was one of my favourite indulgences- when else do you ever get the chance to order whatever you want, without having to consider the tastes of the rest of the family or group. this time it's just for you!
Planning in advance, you might want to bring some of your favourite snacks. I also recommend a pop top water bottle- which makes taking pills a little easier when you can't sit up.
Would love to know what you would add to the above- what elevated your hospital stay?
A New Perspective on Recovery
This journey taught me that even in unexpected places, calmness, comfort, and joy can be found. By following my hospital checklist and appreciating the small things, I not only got through the surgery but thrived during my recovery. A positive mindset and careful preparation can truly transform your hospital visit into a nurturing retreat.
Whether you are facing surgery yourself or helping a loved one prepare for a hospital stay, I hope my experience and checklist inspire you to create your own cozy haven!
